The average office professional in America receives nearly 150 emails daily. With that amount of traffic serving as your competition to your users’ attention, you need to find a way to set your content apart from the crowd to break through the madness. Not to worry, we’ve compiled a list of general best practices to keep in mind when crafting your subject lines, those crucial nuggets that will either inspire people to click through your email…or not.
Below is a sneak peek of 5 open-worthy email subject lines from our latest #12monthsofmarketing program template. Download the template for the full list.
1. Communicate urgency
“Act now!” can be very effective but be sure it isn’t too near the realm of a sales pitch. You want your audiences to understand the urgency to open your email, just like you do.
2. Pique interest but don’t be too vague
Inspire curiosity through interesting subject lines without being so vague that they get picked up by spam filters, it is a fine line to walk. Speaking of spam filters, watch your punctuation usage; using a question mark and exclamation point in the same subject is pretty much a surefire way of getting caught in one.
3. Play big brother
If a registration was abandoned (or a purchase, if you operate within the B2C space), an email with a discount code inside might just be the key to getting that sponsor, attendee, customer, etc. to complete their purchase.
4. Cut to the chase
Keep it short and sweet; aim for 6 words or less. You want to be able to see your entire subject line without having to click through to the email itself; keep in mind that many people read emails on their mobile devices now.
5. Keep it personal
Use first names when possible (not full names; you aren’t their parent) and avoid “no-reply@…” and “info@…” as reply-to email addresses. If this sounds complicated, it isn’t! This is an easy thing to do with email marketing platforms like Constant Contact.
